Nidri sits about 16 km south of Lefkada Town on the sheltered east coast and is the most practical base for a rental car. The drive from Preveza (Aktion) airport is about 38 km and crosses the Aktio-Lefkada floating bridge, which swings open on a fixed daily schedule (each opening about 10-15 minutes plus 20-30 minutes of backlog) - check the current times on the port authority site lefkadaports.gr, as they change during the 2026 canal works. In Nidri the central seafront is closed to cars on summer evenings, and under Greece's 2025 traffic code (Law 5209/2025, in force 13 September 2025) illegal parking is fined from EUR 30, rising to EUR 150 plus a 20-day licence suspension on the pedestrianised seafront; the old 50% early-payment discount is gone and the fine now follows the driver, not the rental company, so use a managed lot (about EUR 5-15 a day). Realistic summer drive times from Nidri: Dimosari waterfalls 10 min, Vasiliki 30-35 min, Kathisma 50-65 min, Porto Katsiki 70-90 min on the safe paved route via Vasiliki (not the shorter GPS mountain track, which is unpaved in places and voids rental insurance); Egremni is closed to cars for the 2026 season and reachable only by boat. The Meganisi car ferry loads at the Nidri quay (car EUR 12.60, foot passenger EUR 1.70, about 25 minutes) with no reservation - arrive 30 minutes early and pay on board - and CDW is void on the ferry, so most renters leave the car and walk on. Economy cars start from about EUR 35 a day with free delivery to the airport or hotel; a compact handles every paved route better than a wide SUV.
